Pope Walks Out Over Criticism of Israel

Pope Benedict XVI has responded to a Palestinian chief judge calling attention to Israeli crimes by staging a walkout.

Chief Islamic Judge of the Palestinian Authority Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi in a speech delivered at the Notre Dame Pontifical Institute in Jerusalem (al-Quds) fired a shot at Israeli conduct in occupied Palestinian lands.

In the presence of the Pope, the Palestinian judge hit out at Tel Aviv for "killing Gaza's children", "bulldozing Palestinian homes" and "destroying mosques".

Tamimi also called for the immediate return of all Palestinian refugees, and went on to urge Christians and Muslims to unity against political Zionism.

However, before the meeting was officially over, the Pope shook Tamimi's hand and walked out.

Director of the Holy See Press Office Father Federico Lombardi responded to Tamimi's remarks later by saying that it was "a direct negation of what dialogue should be."

"We hope that such incident will not damage the mission of the Holy Father aiming at promoting peace and interreligious dialogue as he has clearly affirmed in many occasions in this pilgrimage."

"We hope also that interreligious dialogue in the Holy Land will not be damaged by this incident," Lombardi said.
